Alternative healthcare has become increasingly popular over the last decade or two. But, historically, because it is sometimes viewed as outside the norm, particularly by insurance companies, it has been difficult for individuals to get comparable coverage, or coverage at all. This may now be changing at least at some level, with the advent of the affordable care act.
Alternative medicine is defined as any of a range of medical therapies that are not regarded as orthodox by the medical profession, including meditation, acupuncture, chiropractic care and homeopathic treatment and other things. But the National Institutes of Health reports that alternative health care is used by about 40% of adults in the US, many reporting very positive results.
Affordable Care Act Impact on Alternative Medicine
With the recent implementation of the Affordable Care Act, could alternative medicine finally be covered by insurance so that access could be increased for so many Americans who cannot take advantages of these services otherwise? The answer is, of course complex, but at least leaning somewhat in a positive direction.
Section 2706 of the Affordable Care Act states that insurance companies “shall not discriminate” against any state-recognized health care provider. This is an exciting development for the alternative medicine community because it effectively means that a patient who is complaining of back pain should be able to file their chiropractor visit with their insurance company. This effectively means that alternative medicine providers must be reimbursed the same as medical doctors, which really opens the door for those wishing to pursue alternative medicine treatment options. However, despite these significant strides, some states have have excluded chiropractic care, so this will be an ongoing battle but the state of Minnesota approves insurance paid chiropractic care as a means of rehabilitation in many cases.
