A sinus infection develops when a virus, bacterium, or a fungus expands within a sinus and creates an irregular barrier of the sinus ostium. When the barrier goes down, drainage of mucus and pus occur. The drainage typically travels from the nasal passages to the throat or out the nostrils. These infections also cause inflammation of one or more sinuses. Inflammation can block the openings of the sinuses and the person may experience discomfort.
Inflammation of the air cavities within the passages of the nose is known as sinusitis. Sinusitis can stem from infection, but can also stem from allergies and irritation of the sinuses. Sinusitis is very common and most people experience it at some point in their lives.
At AdvaCare Clinics in Bloomington, MN we are an Outpatient Rehabilitation Facility (ORF) with advanced healthcare solutions and combine physical therapy, chiropractic care, and medical procedures for best results and recovery all under one roof. Causes of Sinus Infections
Sinus infections can develop by anything that constricts the airflow into the sinuses and the drainage of mucus out of the sinuses. The sinus openings can get clogged by swelling of the tissue lining covering. Common colds, allergies, and tissue annoyances like over the counter nasal sprays, cocaine, and cigarette smoke are just a few common causes. Sinuses can also become obstructed by tumors or growths that are next to the sinus openings.
Symptoms of Sinus Infections
The most common complaints that connect with a sinus infection are headache, facial tenderness, pressure or pain, and fever. Nevertheless, a small number (25%) of patients can develop a fever with an acute sinus infection.
Other typical symptoms are:
- cloudy, discolored nasal drainage
- a feeling of nasal stuffiness
- sore throat
Some patients detect a higher amount of sensitivity or headache when they lean forward because of the added pressure placed around the sinuses. Other patients might experience tooth or ear pain, fatigue, or bad breath. Sinusitis that is not caused by an infection can develop allergy symptoms of itching eyes and sneezing. Nasal drainage is typically clear or whitish-colored in people who have noninfectious sinusitis.
