Buerger’s disease, also known as thromboangiitis obliterans, is a rare disease of the arteries and veins in the arms and legs. In Buerger’s disease, your blood vessels become inflamed, swell and can become plugged with blood clots. This leads to damage or destroys skin tissues and can lead to infection and gangrene. Buerger’s disease typically first appears in the hands and feet and can eventually affect larger areas of your arms and legs.
Buerger’s disease is very rare in the United States, but is more common in the Middle East and Far East. Buerger’s disease normally affects men younger than 40 years of age, but it’s becoming more common in women. Almost everyone diagnosed with Buerger’s disease smokes cigarettes or uses other forms of tobacco, such as chewing tobacco. Immediately stopping any form of tobacco is the only way to stop Buerger’s disease. For those who refuse to quit, amputation of all or part of a limb can result.
At AdvaCare Clinics in Bloomington, MN we are a clinic with advanced healthcare solutions and have been helping patients suffering from Buerger’s disease, and educating patients about its symptoms and conditions. We combine physical therapy, chiropractic care, and medical procedures for best results and recovery all under one roof. We offer many holistic treatments that can help you with your pain and gain symptom relief.
Causes of Buerger’s Disease
It is not truly known what the cause of Buerger’s disease is. One theory is that some people can have a genetic inclination to the disease. The condition is described by the swelling in the arteries and veins of the arms and legs. The cells that cause the inflammation and swelling and causing blood clots form in the vessels following to your hands and feet and plug the blood flow to those areas of your body.
Lack of blood flow means that the skin tissue in your hands and feet doesn’t get enough oxygen and nutrients. This causes the signs and symptoms of Buerger’s disease, starting with pain and weakness in your fingers and toes and reaching to other parts of your arms and legs.
Symptoms of Buerger’s Disease
Buerger’s disease symptoms are:
- Pain that can come and go in your legs and feet or in your arms and hands. This pain usually develops when you use your hands or feet and gets better when you stop that activity
- Inflammation along a vein just below the skin’s surface typically because of a blood clot in the vein
- Fingers and toes that turn pale/white when exposed to cold
- Painful open sores on your fingers and toes
